One of the best rides in Rotorua is the Whakarewarewa Forest Loop, which passes right by our park. The 34km trail is designed to be accessible for most mountain biking abilities, as long as you’re a confident rider.

Don’t miss the amazing views over Rotokakahi (the Green Lake), and the city of Rotorua. We also recommend stopping halfway at Secret Spot for a latte and a shinny dip. At the end of the trail, you’ll be rewarded with more stunning views of the Blue Lake as you exit the Feeder trail. The full loop should take around 2-3 hours, though there are shorter options if you prefer. Here are a few different trails to try depending on your ability.

This will take you around the beautiful Blue Lake. Start along the Tangaroa Mihi trail, onto Tikitapu Road, then back down Tarawera Road to the holiday park.

This is a great way to really get a feel for the forest loop trails, without having to ride the full 34km! Again, start with Tangaroa Mihi (this is a two way trail, so ride with a little bit of caution). Make sure to check out the amazing views across Rotokakahi by riding along Te Kotukutuku. From there, turn back up Jeff’s Link to Tikitapu Road, and finish with Tangaroa Mihi.

Looking for some faster trails? This will take you on a real adventure! Start with the Feeder trail (again, this is two way, so ride with care). Then, cruise along the gravel to the Putake o Tawa car park. Take the Te Pou Koropu trail to the start of Apumoana. Once you reach the end, head down Te Poaka, once rated the 6^th best MTB trail in the world! From here, take the Direct Road onto the Apumoana Extension, and into Mahana. A gravel track will then lead onto Whaki, then back along the gravel from Putake o Tawa, and finish with the Feeder trail.

The Putuake o Tawa carpark is just a 3 minute drive (or 10 minute ride) from Rotorua Blue Lake TOP 10. From there, you’ll have a number of world-class trails at your fingertips! Here are a few we’d recommend:

• Eagle vs Shark – Grade 3 (2.5km)
• Whaki – Grade 3 (2.4km)
• Black House Down – Grade 4 (0.8km)

Storage spaces (with locks) can be hired from reception for just $1 per night of your stay. The entire bike storage facility is opened at 8am each day, and locked at 8pm each evening.

Mountain Bike Rotorua also operate their TAWA WAKA shuttles on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays, School Holidays, and Public Holidays.

This shuttle will pick you up from the Putake o Tawa carpark, and take you right into the Redwoods, where you’ll have countless world-famous trails.
